Getting the hanging height of a pendant light wrong is one of the most common lighting mistakes in Australian home renovations. Too high and the light becomes ineffective. Too low and you are walking into it.
This guide gives you specific measurements for every situation - dining tables, kitchen islands, entryways, bedrooms and high ceilings.
The Golden Rule
The bottom of your pendant should sit at the right height for human interaction with the space below it:
- Above a surface you sit at (dining table, island bench): high enough to clear sightlines but low enough to feel intimate
- Above a walkthrough area (entryway, hallway, stairwell): must clear head height with room to spare
- Above a bedside table: should sit at roughly seated eye level
Pendant Height Above a Dining Table
70-90cm from the top of the dining table surface to the bottom of the pendant shade. For standard ceiling heights (2.4-2.7m), aim for 75-80cm. If you have high ceilings (3m+), you can go up to 90cm without the pendant feeling disconnected from the table.
Pendant Height Above a Kitchen Island Bench
30-45cm from the bench top to the bottom of the shade. At this height, the pendant provides focused task lighting without blocking your view across the kitchen. Larger statement pendants (35cm+ diameter) work best at the 40-45cm mark.
Pendant Height in an Entryway or Foyer
The Australian building standard for minimum door height is 2.1m. Aim for 2.1-2.3m from floor to bottom of pendant for a single-storey entryway. For double-height foyers, hang the pendant to fill the void or at the 2.1-2.3m mark depending on pendant size.
Pendant Height in a Bedroom
For a bedside pendant, hang it so the bottom of the shade sits at approximately 120-140cm from the floor, or 40-60cm above the mattress surface. For a central bedroom pendant, keep the bottom of pendant at minimum 2.1m from floor.
The General Room Rule
Bottom of pendant = ceiling height minus 45-60cm. For a 2.7m ceiling: 2.7m - 0.5m = 2.2m from the floor. This keeps the pendant well above head height and in the visual sweet spot for the room.
How to Measure Before You Buy
- Measure the height from floor to ceiling
- Decide where the bottom of the pendant should sit
- Calculate cord length: ceiling height minus desired bottom height minus fitting depth (typically 5-10cm)
- Most pendants come with adjustable cord lengths - check the product listing for maximum drop
Quick Reference Table
| Location | Height from surface/floor |
|---|---|
| Dining table | 70-90cm above table surface |
| Kitchen island bench | 30-45cm above bench surface |
| Entryway / walkthrough | 2.1m+ above floor |
| Bedroom bedside | 40-60cm above mattress |
| General room | Ceiling height minus 45-60cm |
