Bedroom lighting is frequently the last thing people think about and the first thing they regret. A single ceiling light in the centre of a bedroom produces flat, unflattering light that is too bright for winding down and too harsh for waking up. Getting bedroom lighting right means thinking about how the room is actually used across a whole day, and then designing a system that serves all of those moments.
The Three Functions of Bedroom Lighting
A well-lit bedroom needs to handle three distinct tasks:
- Ambient light: General illumination for getting dressed, cleaning the room, or seeing your way around at night. Usually a central ceiling fixture or recessed downlights.
- Task light: Focused light for reading in bed, applying makeup at a dresser, or working. Bedside table lamps or wall-mounted reading lights on swing arms.
- Accent or mood light: Soft, low light for winding down in the evening. This might be a dimmable pendant, a table lamp on its lowest setting, or concealed LED strip lighting.
Most bedrooms only have the first, which is why they feel flat and functional rather than restful and considered.
Bedside Lighting: Table Lamps vs Wall Lights
This is the most personal decision in bedroom lighting, and there is no wrong answer. The choice usually comes down to bedside table size, ceiling height, and aesthetic preference.
Bedside Table Lamps
The classic choice. A pair of matching table lamps on bedside tables creates symmetry, warmth, and a finished look. The bottom of the shade should sit at roughly shoulder height when you are seated in bed, which for most adults is around 40 to 50 centimetres above the mattress surface. This puts the light source where it is useful for reading without shining directly in your eyes.
Bedside Wall Lights
Wall-mounted reading lights on adjustable swing arms are a space-saving alternative that works particularly well in rooms where bedside tables are small or absent. They keep the table surface clear, can be positioned precisely for reading, and look intentional and architectural. The downside is that they require wiring into the wall, which means planning ahead during renovation or new build.
Pendant Lights in the Bedroom
Replacing a central ceiling light with a pendant (or a pair of pendants hung on either side of the bed) is one of the most effective upgrades in a master bedroom. A pendant at a lower hanging height immediately creates a more intimate scale, brings the focal point down to where people actually are, and allows for better dimming control than a standard ceiling rose.
Avoid hanging pendants so low that they are at eye level when standing. In most bedrooms, the bottom of a bedside pendant should sit at 1.5 to 1.6 metres from the floor.
The Master Bedroom Ceiling Light
If you have a master bedroom with sufficient ceiling height, a well-chosen ceiling fixture makes a significant difference to the overall feel of the room. In Hamptons and coastal-style homes, a relaxed wicker or rattan pendant works beautifully. In contemporary bedrooms, a sculptural pendant in matte black or brushed brass adds character. In larger bedrooms, a chandelier anchors the space and adds a sense of occasion.
Whatever you choose, connect it to a dimmer. A bedroom ceiling light at full brightness is aggressive. At 30 percent, it becomes warm and ambient.
What Colour Temperature for a Bedroom?
Bedroom lighting should be warm. Stick to 2700K for all bedside and ambient lighting. This is the warmest end of the residential spectrum and the most relaxing. It also supports your body's natural sleep cycle, as cooler light (above 3000K) suppresses melatonin production and makes it harder to wind down.
If you have a dressing table or ensuite where you need more accurate light for grooming, a slightly cooler 3000K is acceptable in that specific zone.
Dimmers: Not Optional
Dimmers in the bedroom are not a luxury. They are the single most effective thing you can do to improve bedroom lighting. A dimmer gives you full control over light level across the day: bright for mornings, soft for reading, near-off for falling asleep. Make sure all globes in dimmable fixtures are marked as dimmable, as non-dimmable LEDs will flicker or buzz on a dimmer switch.
Kids Bedroom Lighting
Children need good task lighting for homework and creative play, as well as the ability to reduce light levels significantly for sleep. A ceiling light on a dimmer plus a desk lamp or dedicated task light covers both needs. Consider a low-level nightlight or a lamp that can be left on a very low setting overnight for children who are unsettled in complete darkness.
