A chandelier that is too small disappears in a room. One that is too large overwhelms it. Getting the size right is the difference between a chandelier that looks intentional and one that looks like an afterthought.
This guide gives you the exact formulas used by interior designers - for room size, dining table size, ceiling height and chain length.
How to Calculate Chandelier Diameter
Method 1: The Room Method
This works for any room where the chandelier hangs in the centre of the space (not directly above a table).
- Measure your room length and width in metres
- Add the two measurements together
- Convert to centimetres - this is your ideal chandelier diameter
Example: A 4m x 5m living room = 4 + 5 = 9, so a chandelier approximately 90cm in diameter.
This is a guide, not a rule. A strong architectural statement can go 10-15% larger. A room with lots of competing furniture and art can go smaller.
Method 2: The Table Method
For a chandelier hanging directly above a dining table, use the table as your reference:
Chandelier diameter = approximately 50-60% of table width.
For a 90cm wide dining table, aim for a 45-54cm diameter chandelier. For a 120cm table, aim for 60-72cm. The chandelier should never extend beyond the edges of the table when viewed from above.
Chandelier Hanging Height
The standard for a chandelier above a dining table: 75-90cm from the table surface to the bottom of the chandelier. For standard 2.4m ceilings, aim for 75-80cm. For higher ceilings (3m+), you can go to 90cm.
For a chandelier in a room without a table below, the formula is: ceiling height minus 45-60cm = height of chandelier bottom from the floor. This should always clear 2.1m above floor level for safety.
Chain or Rod Length
To calculate the right drop:
Chain length = ceiling height - desired chandelier bottom height - chandelier body depth
A typical chandelier body is 30-60cm tall. Example: 2.7m ceiling, bottom at 1.9m, chandelier body is 40cm tall. Chain needed: 2.7m - 1.9m - 0.4m = 0.4m (40cm of chain).
High Ceiling Chandeliers
For rooms with ceilings above 3m - double-height foyers, stairwells, grand dining rooms - a standard chandelier can look undersized. Consider:
- A chandelier with a longer body or multiple tiers
- Extending the chain to fill vertical space
- A chandelier sized for the floor area, not just the ceiling height
In stairwells, the chandelier is typically hung from the highest point with the bottom of the fitting clearing the lowest landing by at least 30cm.
Quick Reference
| Room Size | Recommended Diameter |
|---|---|
| Small room (3x3m) | 50-60cm |
| Medium room (4x4m) | 70-80cm |
| Large room (5x5m) | 90-100cm |
| 90cm dining table | 45-54cm |
| 120cm dining table | 60-72cm |
| 150cm dining table | 75-90cm |
