Halogen downlights dominated Australian homes throughout the 1990s and 2000s. Today, LED downlights have replaced them almost entirely - and for good reason. But with so many LED options on the market, how do you choose?

This guide covers the genuine differences between LED and halogen downlights, what to look for in a quality LED, and the questions worth asking your electrician before a retrofit.

LED vs Halogen: The Core Differences

Factor LED Downlight Halogen Downlight
Wattage (typical) 10W 50W
Energy use 80% less than halogen Baseline
Lifespan 15,000-25,000 hours 2,000 hours
Heat output Low (warm to touch) Very high (hot enough to burn)
Fire risk Low Higher (requires fire-rated housing)
Dimming Compatible with LED dimmers Compatible with standard dimmers
Running cost (per globe/year) ~$3-6 ~$18-24

The Energy Savings Are Real

A single 10W LED downlight replacing a 50W halogen saves 40W per hour of use. For a typical Australian home with 12 downlights running 4 hours a day:

Annual saving: 40W x 12 lights x 4 hours x 365 days = 700kWh per year. At Perth current electricity rate of approximately 30c/kWh, that is around $210 per year in electricity savings from a single downlight retrofit - before accounting for replacement globe costs.

Heat and Fire Safety

Halogen downlights run hot enough to ignite insulation in roof cavities if installed incorrectly or if insulation is pushed up against the fitting. This has caused house fires in Australia. Building codes require fire-rated downlight housings for halogen fittings installed where insulation is present.

LED downlights run at much lower temperatures and pose significantly less fire risk. Many modern LED downlights are rated for insulation contact (IC-rated), meaning they can be covered by ceiling insulation without risk.

Dimming LED Downlights

LED downlights are dimmable - but they require a compatible LED dimmer switch. Standard incandescent or halogen dimmer switches often cause LED lights to flicker, buzz, or not dim smoothly.

If you are retrofitting LED downlights into a home with existing halogen dimmers, budget to replace the dimmer switches as well. Your electrician can specify the right dimmer model for your LED brand.

Colour Temperature - Warm vs Cool

Colour temperature affects how a room feels:

  • 2700K (warm white): Like a traditional incandescent bulb. Warm, flattering. Best for bedrooms, living rooms, dining rooms.
  • 3000K (soft white): Slightly cooler than warm white but still flattering. Works in kitchens and bathrooms.
  • 4000K (cool white/neutral): Crisp, clean light. Best for kitchens, bathrooms, home offices.
  • 5000K-6500K (daylight): Blue-white. Best for garages, workshops, commercial spaces.

Our 3-colour switch downlights let you select warm, neutral or cool light from the same fitting - one product that adapts to any room.

What Makes a Quality LED Downlight?

Not all LED downlights are equal. Look for:

  • CRI (Colour Rendering Index) of 80+: CRI measures how accurately colours appear under the light. Below 80 and colours look dull and unnatural.
  • Flicker-free driver: Poor LED drivers flicker at frequencies invisible to the eye but detectable by the brain - causing headaches and eye strain over time.
  • Australian SAA certification: Ensures the fitting meets Australian electrical safety standards.
  • Thermal management: Quality LEDs have proper heat sinks to manage operating temperature and extend lifespan.

Halogen Retrofit vs New Installation

If you are replacing existing halogen downlights: many LED downlights are designed as direct halogen replacements and use the same GU10 or MR16 base. Your electrician can often swap the globe without replacing the housing.

If you are doing a full renovation or new build: install integrated LED downlights (no separate globe) for the best long-term value. The LED module is sealed into the fitting and carries the full 15,000-25,000 hour lifespan rating.
